Web Design firms use a lot of tech-jargon. Here's a quick rundown to help keep things straight.

Accessibility Standards

Accessibility Standards are guidelines that ensure Web content is accessible to people with disabilities. Wherever possible Chris Laskey Design complies with these standards and encourages all developers to do so as well. Unfortunately these standards are underutilized, so for the sake of a better internet for everyone, please ask for compliance with these standards no matter who does work for your company. You can read more about these guidelines here.

Content Management Systems

The purpose of a Content Management System (CMS for short) is to manage the website content in a easy-to-use way. Rather than having to run special software (such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage) or delve into the HTML code to update content, a CMS system allows the owner to edit content through their web browser. If you've ever blogged on the internet, added to Wikipedia, or updated your schedule in Google Calendar, you've used a CMS system before!

CMS systems work by storing all the content in one central location, in a database or a flat file. So when you want to change something - such as make an announcement, fix a typo, display this weeks special sales - you simply log in and the appropriate data is put at your fingertips. Once your done editing or adding, just click save and instantly everyone will see the changes.

A CMS can do more than update your sites text. Ever want to expand your site to include e-commerce sales? Or maybe you'd like to have customer service surveys with results just a click away? Or maybe what you really need is a private area for a team of employees to organize their work, with shared calendars, notes and deadlines? The possibilities are endless.

I specialize in Advanced CMS designs. Whether its a photo gallery, blogging interface, or something totally new and exciting, we can make your company's needs a reality.

Cross-Browser Support

Unfortunately not all Web Browsers were created equal. A website may look great in Firefox, but appear broken in Safari or Internet Explorer. At Chris Laskey Design we guarantee all features of your website will work in every browser. We further guarantee your website will look nearly identical whether your viewing it in Internet Explorer 7, Safari, Firefox, or any other W3C Compliant browser.

Mobile Phone Optimization

Browsing the web is no longer restricted to just computers. Most new Cellphones and PDA's come standard with web browsing capabilities. But due to their smaller screen sizes and resolutions, websites do not display well on these portable devices. To solve this problem, Chris Laskey Design can create a streamlined version of your site that will be automatically displayed whenever a mobile device accesses your page.

W3C Standards

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sets the standard for website coding languages. Chris Laskey Design meticulously follows these standards, ensuring your site looks and functions correctly no matter who is browsing it. No matter who designs your site, demand that your company's site is W3C compliant. You can read more about the standards here.
